Murder, Begging & ZOMG!!!

3FER-archived-edition

Heat and humidity has finally hit the Upper Midwest, and with it people are escaping to cabins  and slowing down. The mobile world is not. There are some stories that you missed in the last month.

Here are 7 of the 15 items that I sent in June:

#1: Better Mobile Web Navigation:

While less than 20% of organizations have a mobile web site, browsing through many of them can be a nightmare. Though the site looks great on a mobile, navigating through stacks of text links and buttons can only be done if your fingers are toddler-sized. The peeps at Bluetrain Mobile have a great post on this issue:

#2: Using Murder to Promote a Museum.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has created an interesting mobile site to promote the reopening of their American Wing. It’s not the usual QR-code-to-audio unimaginative route that most museums pursue. It’s a murder mystery meant to intertwine the exhibit into the story line. Have a go at it:

#3: Let the Political Begging Begin!

Last night the Federal Election Commission green-lighted Text2Give campaigns for federal elections. (The Red Cross used this method to raise over $100M for Haiti & Japan…$10 at a time.) While it may take a while for the mobile carriers to catch up, you should start seeing mobile asks leak into political advertising, email and events in the weeks to come. This Reuters article will bring you up to speed:

#4: The (Unexpected) Benefits of SMS

Here’s a great infographic from last week:

#5: Some Big Players Finally Get It.

It’s good to see that some big companies are finally getting mobile. From Proctor & Gamble’s QR code truck to Hennessey’s video-intensive iPad app, this post in Mobile Marketer provides plenty of case studies to fuel your mobile brainstorming:

#6: Square Widens SMB Capabilities.

As more companies move into the mobile payments world, Square is starting to show what markets it’s targeting. They recently added features like digital punch cards (based on frequency and spending amounts), offers for first-time visitors and card-less payment options for efficiency. Now their system will acknowledge that that 10th coffee you purchased at your favorite morning stop is in fact free, and won’t charge your card on record. Check out what they’re doing in Mobile Commerce Daily:

#7: ZOMG!!! GR8 Post of TXT Acronyms.

Though I pretty much eat, sleep and drink mobile these days, I’m constantly schooled by my nieces about common text terms and abbreviations. That forces me to refer to this Time’s Techland blog post more than I care to admit:
