KPCB’s annual Internet Trends report overloads marketers with actionable insights. This year was no exception, but the graph above (slide #96) was the clear standout.

Mobile (smartphone & tablet) usage now exceeds TV globally for consumers aged 16-44 across 29 countries, sans France. (Who knew the French were such focused couch potatoes?)

Mobile’s growing dominance requires some radical changes:

  • Broadcasters must adapt their distribution models toward mobile, and they should pay special attention to the mobile video habits of the Chinese.
  • Global brands need to redistribute of their media budgets accordingly.
  • Those brands marketing to Americans should immediately up their mobile spend:

And just in case I get some pushback from some old-school media buyers, 84% of Americans really aren’t watching TV when they’re watching it:
